choosing audio, creating storyboards and animatics, moodboards, character design, character breakdowns
Monday 8th April
Audio starts at 0:58 – 1:12Audio chosen for the project:: I decided to choose this particular part of the audio from the clip as I really want to focus on character acting as well as matching the facial expressions through how each word is being used and I feel that this specific part of the scene actually has a lot of emotions through the choice of words and how the actors say it. Overall moldboard:: for the overall theme of my animation I decided I wanted a really dramatic soap opera vibe with a hint of royal core aesthetic and I want to use mostly blues and purples also for the style of the character’s I wanted to go into a mix of anime and manwha artstyle.Rosabelle moodboard:: For the female character I want her design to resemble a Disney princess but in an anime/manwha artstyle so I decided to use Aurora (from the live action Maleficent 2014) as I really like the way the actress’s hair is styled and I also took inspiration from the Disney’s live action Cinderella 2015 as I really like the design and silhouette of the ballgown. George moodboard:: For the male character I wanted his design to be more on the stoic type of character and I want his overall shape language to be a square/rectangle. I decided to look into knights and royal guards as a concept for his overall design. Background moodboard:: For the background I was having trouble on figuring out what type of artstyle it should be in as I’m not really used to into making backgrounds, but I want the backgrounds to read nicely with the characters and not stand out too much. For the background I really want it to be set inside of one of the rooms in a castle so I decided to look at photos of what a room inside the castle look like and what the furniture and architectural structures look like which I could incorporate when I started to do my backgrounds.
Wednesday 10th April
Really rough storyboard:: For the first draft I decided to just jot down how the pacing and camera shots looked in my head.Animatic:: For the animatic (which I’ve done in rough animator) I decided to draw the character’s more accurate to their respective silhouette as well as the rough layout of the background. I also broke the 180 degree rule which I then fixed in the final animation. Overall I really liked this process of the animation pipeline as I got into more detail of how the scene plays out whilst also adding details like the timing of the facial expressions and the character movements.
Friday 12th April
First sketches of the characters (on a sketchbook)Rosabelle character sheet:: For Rosabelle I chose her colour palette to be predominantly cool colours such as purple and blue whilst also using white (majority) and her overall shape language to have more soft and round edges but with some pointy edges on her hair which gives a good contrast. At first I really wanted to make her dress to have ruffles and folds but it would be too time consuming to animate so in the end I decided to just give her a ball gown with it being reminiscent of a Disney standard princess dress.George character sheet:: For George I really want his colour palette and shape language to contrast Rosabelle so I gave him mostly dark colours (such as dark red and grays) with a hint of light beige and his shape language has more of a constructed look with his cape being long which makes him look big and strong. At first I wanted to put some armoury but I have to change my plans as I’m not really sure how to animate armoury yet and how it settles on the body when the person moves and also I will not be able to finish the animation on time if I added the armoury because of the details.
